How Each System Works
A Bonnell coil unit is made from hourglass-shaped springs joined by a wire mesh. The whole unit behaves as a single surface: pressure on one area is partly transmitted to neighbouring areas. It is a proven, economical system with a long service history.
A pocket spring unit places each spring in its own fabric pocket. Springs move independently, so the mattress conforms to the body contour and transfers less movement between sleepers. Manufacturing is more labour-intensive and material cost is higher.

- Dormitory, staff housing and rental furniture usually specify Bonnell or hybrid units, where the budget is fixed and the mattress must simply perform reliably for years.
- Premium retail ranges typically combine pocket springs with latex or gel memory foam comfort layers, which is where zoned support and body-shaping feel become selling points.
- Roll-packed shipping works with both systems; compression requirements should be confirmed with the manufacturer before the packing line is planned.
What to Confirm With a Manufacturer
Spring count per size, wire gauge, coil height, the number of turns, pocket fabric weight and whether the unit is zoned all change the feel of the finished mattress.
