Certification Is a Market-Entry Cost, Not a Luxury
A mattress that passes easily in one country can be unsellable in another. Fire performance, foam composition and labelling rules are set per market, and retailers increasingly ask for documentation before listing a supplier. Buyers who clarify certification requirements at the quotation stage avoid the most expensive version of this problem: goods that arrive but cannot be sold.
The Standards That Appear Most Often
- CertiPUR-US. Applies to polyurethane foam: verified content for emissions, durability and substance restrictions. Relevant for any mattress containing foam sold into North American retail channels.
- CFR 1633 (16 CFR Part 1633). The United States federal open-flame standard for mattress sets. Compliance is a legal requirement for sale in the US market, typically met through a fire-resistant barrier layer rather than chemical treatment.
- BS 7177. The United Kingdom standard for resistance to ignition of mattresses and bed bases, with hazard categories matched to end use. Contract and hospitality buyers in the UK commonly specify medium hazard levels.
- GOLS and GOTS. Third-party standards for organic latex and organic textiles respectively. They matter for premium natural ranges and are increasingly requested by European retail groups.
- SASO. Conformity requirements for the Saudi Arabian market, usually arranged before shipment.
How Buyers Should Verify Documents
- Check that the certificate holder is the legal entity shipping the goods, not only the brand on the label.
- Confirm the validity period and that the tested product matches the specification being quoted, including foam density and construction.
- Ask whether test reports are third-party issued or self-declared; both exist in the market and carry very different weight with retailers.
- For barrier-based flammability compliance, request the report for the exact barrier and construction combination, because performance is not transferable between designs.
